Fatal Frame

With Halloween just round the corner as October comes to an end, its time to explore all things spooky and creepy. For all you horror junkies out there, this time we will be taking a look at one video game series none for its innovative game mechanic and spectral entities- Fatal Frame

With most of Japanese horror associated with long-haired women clad all in white and/or ghastly-looking spooks screaming for vengeance, you wouldn’t feel very comfortable looking straight at them; let alone stare at them for prolonged periods of time. To progress through this game on the other hand, has you doing just that to get past your adversaries

Released in 2001 on the PS2, the first Fatal Frame had players exploring a decrepit mansion as Miku Hinasaki in search for her brother Mafuyu. With many spirits haunting the house, Miku is equipped with one item to protect herself with; an antique camera called the Camera Obscura, which uses film as “ammo” to photograph and expel these spirits. The game also had players solving puzzles as they went deeper into the story and gaining spirit powers to defend against stronger ghosts.

The series spans 5 games so far, with the latest one coming out in 2014 on the Wii U, Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water. Over the years the game mechanics have been tweaked and streamlined but the weapon of choice still remains the Camera Obscura.
