A Look at MIZ Japanese Restaurant

I had a great time eating with Justine at MIZ, a small restaurant located in town, with its traditional atmosphere and homely décor which reminded me of some of the family restaurants I had visited in Japan. Justine and I had the opportunity to try many of MIZ’s signature dishes, which highlighted their cooking philosophy and high standards.

Half Broiled Salmon

Whetting our appetites, we had half broiled salmon which was carefully prepared and packed full of flavour, while retaining the freshness of salmon sashimi. It was a great start to what would be an unforgettable lunch.

Oyster Dynamite

Following the salmon was a very interesting dish, unique to MIZ which Mariko-san, the owner, was extremely proud to present, the Oyster Dynamite. It is aptly named so as a myriad of tastes exploded in our mouths as we take a bite of the giant oysters. Both Justine and I could not help but stare at them as our mouths salivated.

The sauce for the oyster was the standout ingredient. Even after the oyster was eaten, anything else that could be eaten on the table was seasoned by the remaining sauce. Fret not if oysters are not your cup of tea, this dish has a scallop variation so those Hotate lovers won’t miss out on that sauce!

Gallic Butter Udon

Next, we had the privilege to try a unique fusion dish, Gallic Butter Udon. This was a truly enjoyable dish for me. While not a big fan of udon myself, I found the dish special having not tasted it anywhere else before. Not to mention that there was a healthy serving of caviar on top! This is definitely a must-try if you make the trip down to MIZ!

Bento Set

Perhaps the least flashy dish on the menu was one of MIZ’s very affordable and delicious Bento sets. It features an assortment of classic Japanese foods from sweet egg rolls to sashimi, sushi and even tempura. This is the dish to order if you are looking to enjoy a nice lunch featuring various Japanese favourites. Each set is different and will offer variety in your dining experience.

Sushi

What Japanese meal is complete without an assortment of sushi to indulge in? The California maki and the soft shell crab maki are dishes you find in many, if not, all Japanese sushi restaurants in Singapore. What sets MIZ apart is the freshness of the ingredients used which Mariko-san could not help but have compliment on, and the maki did not disappoint.

Grilled Dishes

Lastly we had a chance to try their grilled dishes. My personal favourite was the grilled squid, cooked to perfection and seasoned with their teriyaki sauce which made the squid all the more delectable. We were also served some of the finest grilled salmon I have ever tasted. According to Mariko-san, the reason for the amount of meat and its tenderness was the part of the salmon used to make the dish. MIZ uses the most expensive part of the salmon, the flesh, to makes most of its dishes. Quality all over.

With MIZ’s high standards and care put into the preparation of their food, I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone who loves Japanese cuisine, or anyone who simply enjoys a hearty meal.
